Filariasis is a group of parasitic diseases caused by filarial worms. Lymphatic filariasis, primarily
caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, is mainly spread by Culex mosquitoes in Cameroon, while in
other African countries, Aedes and Anopheles species also serve as vectors. Commonly known as
elephantiasis, lymphatic filariasis (Fig.1) is one of the 20 Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) that
continues to impact millions of people, despite receiving limited attention.

The use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs), community-wide drug administration, and
improved sanitation are key measures to prevent filariasis transmission. Cameroon has
implemented mass drug administration programs, distributing antifilarial medications like
ivermectin and albendazole to communities at risk. However, educating communities about the
causes, symptoms, and prevention of filariasis is vital in reducing stigma and encouraging early
treatment.

On January 30, the International Day of Neglected Tropical Diseases, we must reaffirm our
commitment to combating filariasis and other NTDs in Cameroon by strengthening public health
systems, increasing awareness, and fostering collaborative efforts.

The Cameroon Association Against Mosquitoes and Vectors (ASCAMVECT) is committed to
playing a significant role in reducing filariasis in Cameroon by working alongside other
organizations dedicated to vector and parasite control.
